Heist servers focus their gameplay on crew jobs like banks, jewellery stores, casino vaults, armoured trucks and art galleries. Each heist requires planning RP before it happens: scouting locations, casing security, procuring equipment, recruiting specialists. Performing the heist itself is the climax of the experience, not the entire gameplay loop. Top heist servers reward players who plan carefully with smoother runs and larger payouts.
Heist crews typically function best with 4-6 active members who have defined roles: driver, hacker, hitter, smooth-talking con artist. Roles tend to bleed over on smaller crews. However, larger crews expect each specialist to carry their weight. Joining an existing crew is typically faster than trying to build your own from the ground up. Most heist servers provide crew-recruitment channels in Discord, where crews scout for new members and players advertise their desired role.

The team that scopes the location, maps escape routes, plans for the police response, and rehearses contingencies breezes through execution. The team that neglects planning trades bullets with cops, loses crewmates, and either barely escapes or doesn't escape at all. Most servers incentivise planning with more take-home and less heat. Approach planning like it's half of the heist, not a hurdle.
Servers commonly feature 'heat', a per-character/per-crew statistic that builds when you commit crimes. If you accumulate too much heat, police will respond faster, send more units, and may involve detectives. Heat dissipates when you lie low for several in-game days or weeks. Skilled heist players monitor their heat level and behave accordingly, rather than relentlessly going for the next job.

4-6 active members is ideal. Fewer than that and you will have to double up on roles. More than that and you split up the profit and there are too many people on the job. Specialised roles (driver/hacker/hitter/smooth-talker) are more effective than jacks-of-all-trades.
Some smaller scores can be run solo - corner stores, stick-ups. Large scores (banks, vaults) need teams. Servers match score size to crew requirements.
Heat is a running score based on recent crimes committed. When your heat is high, you will generally see police arrive faster, with more officers and detectives investigating. Most servers expect players to cool down between scores rather than simply chaining them.
Some do. Heist servers with permadeath increase the tension — botch a heist run and you can lose your character. On non-permadeath servers, injury recovery and prison time are the main consequences.
The majority of heist servers have crew recruiting channels on their Discord. Post what position you're looking for and your level of experience. If you're new, expect to start as an associate on existing crews before being trusted with key roles.
It depends on the server, but large bank/vault robberies typically result in 6-7 figure payouts split between crew members, multiplied further if done cleanly. More important, however, is the cooldown on large scores, as most servers limit how frequently a single crew can pull them off.
