GTA 6 roleplay servers turn the open world into a persistent character-driven city. Players hold jobs, build relationships, and react to events in character — a paramedic responding to a wreck, a mechanic running a chop shop, a journalist covering the police beat. Vice City RP, Heat RP, and similar servers each shape the experience differently, but the common thread is that everything you do should make sense for the character you're playing, not the player behind them. Expect a longer onboarding curve than freeroam servers.
The biggest split in GTA 6 RP is between casual public servers and whitelist communities. Casual servers let you join, build a character, and start playing the same day. Whitelist servers require an application and a vetted character backstory before you spend a minute in the city. Both work; they're different communities. New players usually get more out of casual servers first, then graduate to whitelist servers once they know the depth of RP they want to commit to.

Servers with thoughtful, specific rules about combat resolution, character permadeath, and revenge cycles tend to have stable communities. Servers with vague 'roleplay seriously' rules and 200 active players tend to churn through members. Read the rules before you read the server description — they tell you what kind of city you're walking into.
GTA 6 RP servers run on voice. You don't have to be a trained voice actor, but you do need a working mic, a quiet enough space to use it, and the willingness to talk to strangers in character. Text RP exists on some servers as a backup but it's slower and less natural. If your living situation makes voice difficult, search specifically for servers that explicitly support text RP — it's a smaller pool but they exist.
A GTA 6 RP server is a community where players take on persistent characters and interact in character within the GTA 6 world. Jobs, relationships, conflicts, and storylines play out over weeks and months instead of single sessions.

Most RP servers require players to prioritise their character's safety as a real person would. You can't shrug off being held at gunpoint or walk into a known shootout. Breaking value of life is one of the most common reasons players get warned or banned.
Yes — most RP servers accommodate criminal characters, but expect rules around how crime escalates. Random murder usually breaks server rules; an organised hit with IC build-up and consequences is fine. Read the server's combat rules before committing.
On servers with permadeath, characters can end in a single botched shootout. On servers without permadeath, characters often run for months or years. Either way, expect to spend more time as one character than you would in any other game mode.
Treating the server like single-player. Driving recklessly, ignoring NPCs, breaking immersion to chat OOC. The fastest way to ruin your first week is forgetting that everyone around you is a real player committing to the bit.
