GTA 6 roleplay servers are what really make the open world feel like a persistent character-driven city. You hold jobs, build relationships and react to events as your character — do you work as a paramedic responding to a wreck? Run a chop shop as a mechanic? Cover the police beat as a journalist? Servers like Vice City RP, Heat RP, and others all have their own flavour, but the basics stay the same: everything you do should be something your character would do, not you as a player. There will be a longer learning process than on freeroam servers.
The largest divide in GTA 6 RP comes down to casual public servers vs whitelist communities. Casual servers allow you to hop in, create a character, and start roleplaying the same day. Whitelist servers will require you to apply and have a vetted character backstory before you spend your first minute in the city. Both exist for a reason; they're just different communities. New players will generally benefit more from starting with casual servers before moving on to whitelist communities when they have an idea of what depth of RP they want to take on.

Vice City NightsThe quickest way to know if you will enjoy a server is to ignore the player count and read their rules document. Servers that have well-thought-out, specific rules around combat resolution, character permadeath, revenge cycles etc. tend to have stable populations. Servers that have generic 'roleplay seriously' rules and 200 active players tend to have a revolving door of members. Read the rules before reading the server description - they indicate what kind of city you will be stepping into.
GTA 6 RP servers operate via voice. You do not need to be a professional voice actor but you do need a working mic, somewhere quiet enough to use it, and you need to be willing to verbally communicate with strangers while in character. Text RP is available on certain servers as an alternative but it's clunkier and not as immersive. If your living situation doesn't allow voice, then look specifically for servers that explicitly allow text RP - there are fewer of them but they're out there.
A GTA 6 RP server is a community of players who create persistent characters and roleplay as them within the GTA 6 universe. They interact with each other in character. Jobs, relationships, conflicts and plots can span weeks and months rather than one session.
Casual servers offer instant access. Whitelist servers require you to fill out an application. Normally the application includes writing a backstory for your character and answering quiz questions on the rules. Whitelist applications can take anywhere from 24 to 72 hours on most established servers.
While most servers expect voice communication, a growing minority support text-only RP. Check server descriptions for 'text RP supported' or inquire in the community Discord before joining.
The majority of RP servers expect players to put their character's safety first, as a real person would. You can't laugh off being held up at gunpoint or walk into a known gunfight. Violating value of life is one of the biggest reasons players get warned or banned.
Yes — most RP servers allow criminal characters. However, there are typically rules regarding how crime escalates. Random murder will usually break server rules; setting up an organised hit with IC build-up and ramifications is okay. Check the server rules on combat before diving in.
Characters on permadeath servers can go out in one bad shootout. Characters on non-permadeath servers will tend to run for months or years. In either case, you will probably play through more of one character's life than you would in any other mode.
Acting like there's no-one else on the server. Driving recklessly, ignoring NPCs, breaking immersion by talking OOC. The swiftest way to ruin your first week is forgetting that the other players there are real people committed to the bit.
