Survival, hunting, and rural crafting servers.
Survival servers take GTA 6's countryside and make it the central map. Hunting, fishing, foraging, crafting, building shelter and trading with other players dominate play. Cities still exist but feel more like trading posts than bustling hubs. Good survival servers carefully balance scarcity to create real tension - running out of ammo, food rotting, weather that harms unprepared characters. The pace of survival gameplay is closer to a survival sim than traditional GTA.
Most survival servers feature permadeath or lengthy injury cooldowns. This is because survival needs to mean something. Dying as a geared-up character to wolves or a stray bandit raid means hours of lost time. That is the entire point: the danger is real. Players band together in small communities (generally around 4-10 players) which pool resources, maintain defences, and trade with other settlements. Solo survival can be done, but it's more difficult.

Settlers find a spot, build a home base, defend territory, and farm/gather to hoard stored resources over weeks. Nomads travel light and stash supplies at various caches, avoiding commitments that can be raided. Each is viable, and each appeals to different personalities. You should pick which you want to be sooner rather than later, as the equipment progression for each is not the same.
Shallow crafting servers feel like collecting busywork. Deep crafting trees - tools to craft tools, materials to refine materials - allow for player-driven economies to develop. Hunters supply pelts to crafters who make jackets to trade to traders who run cross-map routes. Find a server where crafting is an important specialisation, not an afterthought.

Servers typically feature hunger, thirst, body temperature tracking, and occasionally disease meters. If you ignore any meter for too long, your character will take damage or perish. Stockpiling food and clean water becomes most of your mid-game survival preparation.
Yes, you can, but it's not easy. Most progression assumes some trading or cooperation. You can survive solo, but you won't be able to reach the later crafting stages that use traded materials. Joining a small settlement is the typical route.
Settlements are player-made shared bases, generally consisting of 4-10 people. These are fortified bases with communal crafting stations and stores of resources. Settlements take weeks to construct and become centres of reputation once completed.
Some wipe every three or six months to refresh the economy and clear territory. Scheduled wipes are typically announced several months ahead of time. Non-wiping servers just stack up older players' stockpiles over time.
Servers usually limit weapons to lower-tier options like bows, hunting rifles and basic firearms. This is to keep PvP balanced and combat lethal. There are high-tier weapons, but they are scarce, expensive and risky to carry.
